The curtain has fallen on yet another chapter of hope dying at the hands of oppression, after Israeli forces intercepted all ships belonging to the Global Freedom Flotilla, which sought to break the siege on Gaza and deliver humanitarian aid to its besieged civilians.
The flotilla, made up of 41 ships, included activists and human rights defenders from different countries around the world. They all came with a single message: rejecting killing, starvation, and the violation of human rights, and showing solidarity with the children and women of Gaza, who have been suffering from blockade and malnutrition for two years.
Israeli forces stormed the ships one by one, diverted them to the port of Ashdod, and detained the activists—an explicit violation of international law and human rights, which guarantee the freedom of movement for civilians and rights defenders.
Their only “crime” was their humanity, their voices rejecting these crimes, and their resilience in the face of systematic starvation and killing.
What happened reflects the international community’s failure to protect human rights, and the silence of governments before such violations, fearful of American pressure, which serves as the shield and cover for these crimes.
International humanitarian law—established to protect civilians in conflicts—was blatantly ignored upon the calm waves of the sea, while the noble mission of the flotilla was to save lives and defend fundamental human rights.
The brutality inflicted on Gaza’s children, women, and civilians has stripped away all false slogans about humanity and the right of peoples to live, affirming that the defense of human rights is not a choice, but a universal duty.
Remaining silent before such violations will not only taint governments, but also entire peoples. For it is the absence of conscience that permits the violation of human rights and the squandering of human dignity—ushering in a new chapter in history, one that will show no mercy.
