When Aid Becomes a Threat: Israel Attacks the Ships of Mercy

Condemnation | 08-10-2025

The Insan Organization for Rights and Freedoms expresses its deep concern over the recent developments involving Israel’s forcible interception of humanitarian relief fleets seeking to break the blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip and to alleviate the suffering of civilians. These actions were accompanied by the arrest of participants and the exposure of several activists to abusive conditions and practices that may amount to torture.

Among the latest violations was the interception of the Freedom Flotilla, consisting of eleven ships, on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, in full view of the international community.

Insan strongly condemns the ongoing practices of the Israeli occupation, which constitute a blatant violation of international laws and norms. The organization affirms that targeting civilians—including children and women—by preventing the delivery of food, medicine, and fuel represents a grave humanitarian escalation that undermines the basic principle of civilian protection.

Preventing the arrival of humanitarian aid, detaining activists, and responding to peaceful efforts with violence—alongside reports of mistreatment of some survivors—necessitate the opening of independent and impartial investigations to verify the facts and hold those responsible for any violations accountable.

The organization reminds the international community, especially member states of the United Nations, of their legal and moral responsibilities to uphold international humanitarian law, protect civilians, and ensure the unhindered delivery of aid.

Silence in the face of these violations constitutes a form of complicity and undermines the international protection system established to safeguard human dignity and security.

Insan Organization urgently calls for the following:

The immediate and unconditional release of detained activists and civilians, the provision of legal and medical access to them, and the investigation of allegations of torture and ill-treatment.

The unhindered entry of essential relief materials into Gaza (food, medicine, fuel, and water) through safe and protected channels.

The launch of independent, transparent international investigations into Israeli violations involving the targeting of civilians and the use of blockade and starvation as tactics, with full accountability before impartial judicial mechanisms.

Encouraging member states to use all available diplomatic and legal means to pressure the responsible parties to end violations and protect civilians, without yielding to political pressures that undermine justice or humanitarian values.

Strengthening the protection of humanitarian workers and ensuring their freedom of movement so they can fulfill their duties without facing risks or detention.

Insan reaffirms its commitment to continued field monitoring and the collection of verified information. The organization will issue periodic reports on any new developments or violations and urges international organizations, human rights groups, and media outlets to intensify efforts for documentation and accountability to safeguard the lives and dignity of civilians.
