Israeli violence against Palestinians in the West Bank is escalating, amid UN warnings that the region is entering a dangerous new phase, as displacement, settlement expansion, and attacks by Israeli settlers intensify. These developments are accompanied by severe humanitarian consequences for civilians, particularly children.
Ramesh Akbikov, the UN Deputy Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, said that the deterioration in the West Bank did not happen suddenly, but rather resulted from decades of unresolved conflict. This has pushed the Palestinian Authority to the brink of collapse and undermined prospects for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
Since January 2023, 127 Palestinian communities have experienced full or partial displacement, including 47 communities whose residents were completely displaced, affecting approximately 6,390 Palestinians.
In 2026 alone, nearly 3,800 Palestinians have been displaced, approximately half of them children, as a result of settler violence, demolitions, and evictions.
The United Nations has documented more than 1,430 incidents involving Israeli settlers during 2026, affecting around 260 Palestinian communities, amid continued lack of accountability. At the same time, Israeli planning authorities have advanced or approved 12,360 settlement units in the occupied West Bank since the beginning of the year, including 7,200 units in Area C and 5,160 in East Jerusalem.
The repercussions of these policies extend beyond walls and land to threaten the future of an entire generation. UNICEF Deputy Executive Director Hanan Suleiman said that Israeli occupation policies and systematic attacks in the West Bank are disrupting the education of around 800,000 Palestinian children.
Behind every statistic is a child living in fear, making their way to school amid military checkpoints, raids, and restrictions on movement. Access to the classroom has become a daily challenge that threatens their fundamental right to education and safety.
Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories, believes that addressing these violations requires firm international measures, calling for Israel to be isolated, sanctions to be imposed, and trade and arms transfers to Israel to be halted.
Against this backdrop, the international response appears inadequate to the scale of the escalating humanitarian catastrophe. As UN warnings multiply and the figures continue to rise, Palestinians continue to bear the cost of violence, settlement expansion, and displacement, amid the absence of effective international measures capable of halting Israeli violations and holding those responsible to account.
