An American Doctor Reveals the Horrors of Israeli Occupation Crimes Against Children

International Interests | 20-08-2026

Under the weight of Israeli bombardment and the ongoing crimes against civilians in the Gaza Strip, the operating room has become yet another scene of the suffering imposed on Palestinians every day. A Palestinian girl no more than five years old lies on the operating table as doctors prepare to amputate her leg, without anesthesia available to relieve her pain.

American physician Mark Perlmutter, who witnessed the health conditions inside the Gaza Strip, recounts a heartbreaking scene that captures the scale of the humanitarian catastrophe caused by Israeli crimes in Gaza.

The five-year-old girl required a leg amputation as a result of the continued Israeli bombardment of the Gaza Strip. However, shortages of medical supplies caused by the conditions of the Israeli assault and blockade deprived her of the anesthesia she needed for such an operation.

The girl remained conscious throughout the surgery, while the medical staff had no way to ease her fear and pain other than singing to her and trying to keep her calm amid a scene far beyond what any child should be expected to endure.

Thus, singing became the only available means of confronting the pain of the surgical blade after a young child was deprived of the most basic medical necessity during an operation whose effects will remain etched in her body and memory for the rest of her life.

According to American physician Perlmutter's testimony, this girl was not an isolated case. He witnessed dozens of Palestinian children who had lost limbs as a result of injuries sustained during Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip, amid hospitals overcrowded with wounded patients and severe shortages of medicines and medical supplies.

The scene reveals one aspect of the human cost paid by the children of Gaza as a result of Israeli military strikes—children who enter hospitals seeking to save their lives, only to find themselves facing traumatic surgeries, exhausted medical resources, and pain beyond their ability to endure.

The gravity of the Israeli crimes witnessed by American physician Perlmutter prompted him to send a message to a U.S. senator, pleading with him to pressure U.S. President Donald Trump to seriously compel the Israeli occupation to implement a ceasefire, warning of continued suffering and further loss of life.

The story of the five-year-old Palestinian girl does not merely encapsulate the tragedy of one child. Rather, it exposes the open wounds left on the bodies of Gaza's children by Israeli attacks, the childhood stolen under bombardment, limbs amputated, and dreams brought to an end on deteriorating hospital beds.

A young girl needed anesthesia before facing the surgeon's blade, but instead found herself confronting the pain fully conscious, while the international community stood unable to stop this tragedy—a scene reflecting a shameful failure to protect civilians and exposing a policy of double standards that has made the lives of Palestinian children appear to carry less value in the calculations of international powers.

While calls to halt Israeli crimes continue to grow, the occupation continues to commit violations in full view of the world, without deterrent measures commensurate with the scale of the crimes being committed against civilians, from Palestine to Lebanon and Syria.
