Her Mother’s Embrace Was Her Last Refuge… An Israeli Occupation Bullet Claims Amal’s Life in Khan Younis

International Interests | 26-08-2026

From Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip comes the story of ten-year-old Amal Abu Khater, revealing a painful aspect of the tragedy endured by the children of Gaza, for whom even moments spent together with their families are no longer safe from Israeli occupation gunfire.

Amal had returned from a Quran memorization class and sat down to lunch with her mother, brother, and maternal uncle. After finishing her meal, she sat in her mother’s lap, playfully interacting with her, before saying her final words to her: “I’ve gotten up from your lap; I want to give you some rest.”

The child moved to the opposite side of her mother, and only moments later, an Israeli bullet struck her in the back, piercing her body and lodging in her heart.

Amal cried out in pain, saying, “Ahhh.” At first, her mother thought that an insect had bitten her. She lifted her daughter’s shirt to check on her, only to be shocked to find blood covering the child’s body.

Amal was not on a battlefield, nor was she carrying a weapon. She was a child returning from a Quran memorization class, sitting among her family in Khan Younis, before a lunch and her mother’s embrace became the final moments of her life.

On the morning of her death, Amal kissed her father goodbye before he left for work and told him: “Dad, take care of yourself. Don’t let anything happen to you.”

She was waiting for him to return. She even refused some of the things her maternal uncle had bought for her, saying: “I just want to stay up with Dad when he comes back from work.”

But the Israeli occupation’s bullet came before her father’s return and before the evening she had dreamed of spending with him.

Her father describes his daughter as someone who loved life, was well-mannered in her dealings with others, and excelled in her studies. He noted that she was a fourth-grade student and had memorized four chapters (juz’) of the Holy Quran.

Thus ended the life of a ten-year-old girl whose world consisted of school, the Quran, her family, her mother’s embrace, and waiting for her father—until an Israeli occupation bullet reduced all her dreams to a single moment.

Amal’s story is not merely an isolated incident; it is one image of the humanitarian tragedy endured by the children of Gaza, where scenes of children being killed and civilians being targeted continue to recur, and the simplest details of daily life are transformed into moments of death and loss at the hands of Israeli occupation forces.

Amid the displacement tents and neighborhoods of Khan Younis, Amal’s story remains a testimony to a crime in which childhood is torn away from its owners before they are given the chance to grow up, complete their education, and live the normal lives they had always dreamed of.

Amal only wanted to stay up with her father when he returned from work, but the occupation had another crime in store for her: its criminal bullet reached her before he could.
