Insan Organization for Rights and Freedoms strongly condemns the killing of Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Ja'ad, imam of the mosque in the village of Tallin in the northern Aleppo countryside of Syria, after his decapitated body was found on the roadside between Suran and Tallin. This horrific crime constitutes a flagrant assault on the sanctity of human life, as well as the sanctity of places of worship and religious figures.
According to circulating information, Sheikh Al-Ja'ad left his home after the Asr prayer last Tuesday, August 25, accompanied by four people who reportedly lured him under the pretext of attending a marriage contract ceremony. Contact with him was then lost, and he was later found murdered.
Circulating information indicates that the crime may have been linked to Al-Ja'ad's religious views regarding the celebration of the Prophet Muhammad's birthday and his affiliation with one of Syria's Sufi orders. Allegations have also circulated regarding the involvement of extremist elements in the crime. Such information requires an independent and transparent investigation to verify the facts and identify those responsible.
The Organization affirms that differences in opinions, beliefs, and religious practices can never, under any circumstances, constitute a justification for killing, incitement, or violence, and that protecting the right to life, freedom of belief, and the freedom to practice religious rites is a legal and moral responsibility that must not be taken lightly.
The Organization expresses its grave concern that religious and sectarian differences may become a pretext for targeting scholars, imams, and religious figures, thereby threatening civil peace and opening the door to further acts of violence, hatred, and extremism.
The Organization also calls on the relevant authorities to launch an urgent, independent, and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killing of Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Ja'ad; to uncover the identity of those who lured him, those who carried out the crime, and those behind it; to refer all those involved, inciters, and individuals who concealed the crime to justice; and to ensure that no one responsible is allowed to escape accountability.
Insan Organization for Rights and Freedoms stresses the need to take serious measures to protect religious figures and civilians from being targeted on the basis of religious or sectarian affiliation or ideological positions, and to confront incitement, takfir, and hate speech in a manner that protects civilian lives, safeguards the sanctity of mosques and places of worship, and promotes coexistence and social peace.
The Organization extends its sincere condolences and sympathy to the family of Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Ja'ad, his students, loved ones, and fellow villagers, affirming that his killing must not go without the truth being uncovered, justice being served, and the perpetrators being held accountable.
