Between International Silence and the Harshness of Winter… Gaza Sinks Once Again

Condemnation | 25-02-2026

The humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip worsened at dawn on Tuesday, as heavy rainfall swept through displacement camps and flooded hundreds of tents across various areas, adding yet another chapter of suffering to a reality already weighed down by blockade and restrictions on the entry of shelter supplies and humanitarian aid.

Photos and videos shared by Palestinian activists and journalists on social media showed tents completely submerged in water, with children and women trying to salvage what remained of their few belongings amid bitter cold and muddy ground. The scenes reflect the fragility of conditions facing around 1.9 million displaced people living in worn-out tents that lack even the most basic means of protection.

The Palestinian Civil Defense Directorate announced that it had received dozens of distress calls due to flooded tents in several areas, confirming that its crews managed to evacuate a number of families in the Al-Mawasi area west of Khan Younis, despite limited resources and difficult access amid severe weather conditions.

Eyewitnesses also reported flooded tents in the Al-Rimal neighborhood and the port area, where circulating footage documented the scale of damage inflicted on the camps.

Since last December, successive winter storms have flooded tens of thousands of tents, resulting in deaths and injuries, in addition to widespread losses of the few possessions displaced families own.

These developments come at a time when living conditions remain largely unchanged despite the declaration of a ceasefire in October 2025, with no tangible improvement in shelter conditions or the level of basic services.

Palestinians accuse Israel of failing to uphold agreed-upon commitments to allow the entry of humanitarian aid, as the repercussions of the war continue. The conflict has left more than 72,000 people dead and caused widespread destruction to infrastructure and vital facilities.

Between heavy winter rains and restrictions at border crossings, hundreds of thousands of displaced people find themselves trapped in a confrontation with both nature and blockade, as international calls intensify to increase pressure on Israel to ensure the flow of aid and provide urgent humanitarian shelter to protect civilians from harsh weather and put an end to the worsening tragedy.
