The Insan Organization for Rights and Freedoms strongly condemns the statement made by U.S. President Donald Trump, which included the use of the name of Mecca — the holiest place on earth for Muslims — in a derogatory and offensive context within a post published on a social media platform.
The Insan Organization considers this rhetoric a direct offense to the religious feelings of billions of Muslims around the world, and a manifestation of religious contempt, incitement to hatred, and disrespect toward religious symbols and sanctities. Such behavior is inconsistent with the moral and political responsibility that holders of influential leadership positions on the international level are expected to uphold.
The organization further emphasizes that respecting religious beliefs and protecting individuals and groups from hate speech and discrimination are among the fundamental principles enshrined in international human rights instruments, including the Charter of the United Nations, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, all of which call for promoting mutual understanding and respect among peoples, religions, and cultures.
The organization calls on the international community and human rights institutions to condemn these statements and to work toward combating all forms of religious contempt and hate speech, regardless of their source, while ensuring that media outlets and social media platforms are not used to incite hatred or offend the religious beliefs of peoples.
